FEB IN PIXELS X BRACES UPDATE

Hey there,

Feb finally came to an end!! So many things happened this past month, but I’m glad they are all over now.
This past month, what’s really tormenting is that each time i gave my explanation, I felt like i’m just finding excuse for myself. I guess i don’t deserve to scratch off that line in my resolution. Oh well..
I guess the thought and anticipation for CNY really did tide me through this period. However, to my disappointment, CNY was really dull this year. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I was too excited for it, but nonetheless, it felt awesome to be able to get a breather and gather with the family!

“Month in pixels” take me quite awhile to post because of the weebly image system. I wish they’d put a QTY bar below the “image” widget, and allow me to type the amount of “image” widgets i need so that the system can auto pop them into the post instead of having me drag the widget one by one. It’s so tedious, laggy, and troublesome!

Okay, as usual, photo spam coming up!

P.s. random but.. I’M IN LOVE WITH MY SONY A5000! It feels like the best splurge everrr.

Picture

I bought many onigiri molds online so i can make some to surprise the boyfriend on Vday. However, our Vday did not include a picnic, so I had to put my equipment to work earlier than Feb 14.

Picture

Here’s the full panda ones! We have a thang for pandas ❤

Picture

They were fairly easy to make. I just hate the cleaning up part though.

Picture

I need to learn more recipes to see this smile again.

Picture

I think my hair has grown significantly longer! Please tell me they did…

Picture

And Mr. Muk (our kite) took flight in less than 10 seconds, I’m not even kidding. The wind was so strong, he soar towards the sky, slicing some rose petals off a bride’s bouquet on his way up. I thought we were going to appear on a murder news report.

Picture

Feb was a celebratory month for me. I had Vday, Ernest’s birthday and CNY to keep me focus ahead before I go crazy over all that stress. On the boy’s birthday, I allowed myself to unwind and treated him to SuFood!

Picture

My charming birthday boy 😀

Picture

Waiting for the food! Did not know what to expect but I decided to come because I remember Jitwoon recommending this place to me.

Picture

The appetizer was pretty awesome! I especially liked the middle one.

Picture

But the cider tasted like cough syrup to me. I squeezed my eyes shut with every sip. We were told that it’s supposed to cleanse your palate.

Picture

THE SALAD WAS DA BOMB!! I’D GO BACK ANY DAY JUST TO EAT THIS SALAD!

Picture

I have been craving for these Rosemary bread sticks since that day! They have quite an addicting taste.

Picture

Birthday boy busying food-stagraming too.

Picture

I chose the pumpkin soup and it was mehh… Not enough flavor.

Picture

On the other hand, the soup my bf chose was delicious!! I guess their food standard is pretty inconsistent.

Picture

We were quite puzzled when they served us a calzone. Not because we’ve never eaten one (i ate some during my time in Ice Edge Cafe), but because we did not recall ordering a calzone. Nonetheless we dug in and…

Picture

When we were almost done, the waitress approached us with an apology and replaced the calzone with the potato pizza. Turns out we were served the wrong dish, but I was surprised they did not even ask if we would like a replacement or to continue with the calzone, and instead just swiftly replaced the dish. I’m not complaining though, we got to try an additional main dish thanks to them!

Picture

I thought my bf’s seaweed star pizza was the best out of the 3 pizzas because there was more flavor. The bf did not quite like it because of the wasabi.

Picture

Potato pizza is HUGEEE!

Picture

I continued the bf’s celebration by bringing him to “The Company of Cats”!

Picture

This fluffy cannot stop meowing to the workers on the other side of the door.

Picture

My fave furball of the night, and I’m sure you guys can see why!

Picture

SO FREAKING CUTE (FAT), NO?

Picture

I think my phobia for tamed cats have thoroughly cured! I went to a cat cafe in a DRESS. Can you believe it?!

Picture

I think i chose the wrong time to go (8pm) because half of the cats were asleep or getting ready to sleep. But i remember the other time at Neko no Niwa that the cats were more active at night! Hmm..

Picture

Awww

Picture

This one is hyperactive!

Picture

The calm kitty i stuck to most of the time. It didn’t want to come out, but it didn’t mind my stroking. 🙂

I didn’t feel very comfortable being in the confined space with strangers who acted a little “know-it-all”.

And finally… Bella woke up. After we left… -.-

Picture

Secretly ordered a Oreo Cheesecake from Cat & the Fiddle, and had them deliver it straight to his house because I didn’t have time to buy a cake after school. Much thanks for his sister & Mom for helping to receive the cake and not revealing the surprise!

Picture

I was a little too happy, which explains the shaky hands hahahahaha

Picture

Happy 23rd Birthday, Baby! ❤

Picture

The cake was AWESOME!! I read up on the reviews and was a little skeptical & worried at first, but the cheesecake was creamy and rich, totally my cup of tea. I got to bring a few slices home for my parents to try, and both of them were obsessed!

Hope you had a good birthday, darling!

Picture

JOE LABERO MAGIC SHOW! (gasp)

Picture

Super duper excited!

Picture

Picture

There were these dark “shadows” lurking around the waiting area, spooking me out.

Picture

Very vintage, I like.

Picture

There were clips of old magic tricks playing on the screens, and when the show started we were not allowed to use the camera. The show had a pretty dark & intense feeling, but its my first true magic show and i didn’t really know what to expect. Until today I’m still trying to get myself to believe that Joe Labero actually disappeared before my eyes and appeared behind me in last than 5 seconds. I really don’t get it..

Picture

A far shot of the magician himself. A little shaky because he caught me snapping and asked me to go forward and take a proper picture with him (which i didn’t because I was shy and slightly afraid LOL).

Picture

And my sweet, literally sweet, Valentine gift. Thanks baby, love them!!

Picture

Red roses x Peony & Blush Suede. Too much love!

Picture

And 5 days later, it was CNY day 1! Been looking forward to CNY for so long, finally, this day has arrived!! Out to bainian at grandma’s house with my family 🙂

Happy birthday Po po!

I know it’s been long since i last updated my braces, but that’s because there wasn’t much of a difference after all my problematic teeth have been fixed. Its been basically power bands on straight teeth to pull them even closer together.

Looking back, it’s been a year since I first gotten braces! After one year, on Feb 2015, my dentist decided it was time to introduce me to “ELASTIC”.

Picture

This small bands have been giving me the worse headaches ever!! In addition, they kept snapping everytime I eat, and prevented me from opening my mouth wide enough to consume food. Sigh..

Picture

My current smile 😀

Picture

Do you see the elastics?

Picture

Better view of it. Its main purpose is to shift the top row backwards to reduce the overbite.

Picture

I look lika vampire when I open my mouth,,,
I have a bad feeling I will have to keep wearing these elastics in different combinations for the remaining months. Sigh..
Oh well…That’s it for now!

BRACES 3RD & 4TH MONTHS UPDATE

Hey there,

I finally got about writing my braces update post! Whoop whoop! I know I’m pretty late on this, but nonetheless, here it is!

There hasn’t been a drastic change other than having more gaps between my teeth thanks to the extra space left behind from the extraction site. These gaps have been causing some problems for me, such as food getting stuck in between or food falling out of my mouth uncontrollably. (sulks)

Picture

SMILE!

Picture

1st Month – Pink rubber bands, 2nd Month – Purple rubber bands (not shown here), 3rd Month – Light blue rubber bands, 4th Month – Purple rubber bands again!

I actually wanted to take a pastel pink color rubber bands for the 4th month, but half way through the appointment they realized they did not have sufficient bands in that shade, so they asked me if I would like to change to purple or finish up the remaining ones with purple bands. I pictured myself with pink bands on the front teeth and purple bands at the back, and decided I had better not because I’m going to meet many new people this month (orientation :3) and I would rather not draw any extra attention to my mouth by having multi-color bands.

The light blue bands during the 3rd month were beautiful, but they put so much emphasis on my teeth everytime I talk because the light blue appears slightly white, which was not an effect I was going for. By the end of the month, the light blue bands have turned yellow completely as lighter colors are more prone to staining. Sigh..

Picture

Bottom Row
For the bottom rows during these few months, I suppose the main focus is to cover up the gap at the extraction site. During the 3rd month I had addition chains of bands overlapping my back few teeth, and for the 4th month I finally had on some power chains only on the left side of my mouth.

Picture

3rd Month’s overlapping chain

Picture

4th Month’s power chain on the left

Picture

Bent metal (?)
I have no idea why the metal on the right is bent, but I hope it will not affect or slow down the shifting process. During the 3rd month I had to bear with the pain of the extra extending metal hooking onto the back of my cheek. I even grew a super huge ulcer that made a whole area of by gum white. As usual, I was too lazy so I tolerated the pain and managed to wait until my 4th month’s appointment to get them cut off. However, being absent minded, I actually forgot to request during the appointment and left the clinic with the wires still hooking my back cheek. After i remembered, my mom made me go back to the clinic and request for the dentist to cut the extra metal off for me. It was quite embarrassing, knowing that there was a long queue at the dental clinic and yet I had to hold up the queue because of my forgetfulness. But oh well, at least I am no longer in pain now. (wide grin) By the way, the power chains HURT LIKE HELL!!! But the pain only lasted for two to three days, and thankfully the dentist only put them on for the left side so I could chew on the right. I’m happy that it hurts, because that means its working!

Picture

Everytime I brushed my teeth, I would realize that the 2nd last teeth in the bottom row have been tilting inwards more and more. Sometimes I feel like its been jamming against my tongue quite a bit, and I have never felt this before. I have no idea if this was supposed to happen, but I trust that my dentist knows what he’s doing.

Picture

Top Row
I feel like even the top row’s curve has become narrower, comparing the 4th month’s to the 1st month’s. This is probably because the back teeth are tilting inwards more than before as well.

Picture

Besides the leftover extraction gaps, the other teeth towards the front are gapping as well. The 4th month’s one is actually even more obvious. I hope the dentist will decide to start shifting the front two teeth inwards as soon as possible and start closing all these gaps.
See what I meant? These burdensome gaps.. But with gaps, my front teeth can shift back! Woop!

Picture

4th month’s gap

Oh, and something funny happened during my 4th month’s visit. I received a call a week before the appointment, telling me that the dentist is away on 24th (my actual appointment date), so I had to reschedule my appointment. I was told that there was a slot for me on 26th June 11am. So on 26th, I happily went down to the dental clinic thinking that I can finally get those pricky metals out of my ulcer, but got a huge shock when I was told by the receptionist that the dentist is still on leave today and I must have gotten the wrong date. I was quite pissed with the receptionist because she immediately pushed all the blame to me, saying that it MUST BE my mistake, and never once apologized for my inconvenience. How can she be so sure it was MY fault, and not hers, as she was the caller who contacted me? I guess people are just so afraid to take responsibilities for the mistakes they caused, and the most convenient way is to push the blame. I was so mad at her I could not utter a word back to defend myself. I just checked when was the right appointment date (which was the next day..), and stomped out of the clinic in silence before I called my Mom and complain about this shit service.

The best thing is, the next day when the dentist is around, this receptionist girl had a completely 360 degree different attitude than before. I suppose the dentist had instructed them to have good customer service, and so she had to put up a show when the dentist is around, but when he’s not, she forgets all bout providing customer service and resumes to her rude and cowardly self. Thinking back makes me mad again. Urghhh.

Alright, that’s it for now!

XOXO,
Iris

BRACES WEEK 4 X FIRST BRACES FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT

Hey there,

I know I’ve been a little behind schedule with this update. Everyday i wake up with the determination to write up a new blog post, and while I’m having a shower I draft the post out in my head. For some reason, I am able to come up with a whole chunk of things to post about when I’m in the shower but the moment I step out of the toilet, all my ideas seem to drain away from me. That makes me really discouraged and I end up starring at a blank screen not knowing what to write. (sigh)

Nonetheless, I finally decided that I do not have hit perfection on a post because it should be candid and sincere, so here I am typing away without a care, and IT FEELS GOOD!

Anyway here are the pictures for the 4th week of braces!

Picture

Picture

Before braces and after 1 month of with braces

Picture

Is it just me or do you find that my bottom crooked teeth seem to be even more crooked?! Is that even normal?

Picture

Bottom row week 1 to 4
I think I am not just seeing things and that it’s true! Notice how the crooked teeth is week 4 is way more severe than the one in week 2? I hope it’s just an angle problem. :/

Picture

Top row week 1 to 4
There isn’t much of a change except the closing distance between the spaces that my extracted teeth left.

Picture

The wires on the bottom row has left little dashes on my inner bottom lip. It hurts terribly when I close my mouth and the wires sink back into the “moulds” again. In addition it hurts like hell when an ulcer decides to make a home in the little “moulds”. I had a week of #FML moment thanks to them.

I went back to the dentist for a change of wires and rubber bands last week. My dentist is so popular I had to wait about 45 minutes before I get to see him despite having an appointment.

I complained to him about the poking wires at the back of my mouth and he said that it was only 1mm protruding.. LOL But it hurts ok! Nonetheless he still trimmed the wires extra short for me this time so that don’t feel any pain. The ulcers at the back of my mouth finally had peace and healed pretty quickly. I love you Mr Lee 😛

Picture

Can you spot the color of the bottom bands?
I was pretty excited to go for the appointment because I can finally change out of those yellowish transparent rubber bands and also get a new pop of color on the bottom row. I don’t know if it’s because i was too excited or if I am just traumatized with my previous fainting experience due to the extraction, the moment I arrived at the clinic I started having butterflies in my stomach and had to rush to the toilet. This has been happening almost every visit, even when I knew that there wouldn’t be any extreme procedures or pain during that visit. Anyone on the same boat as me?

Picture

It’s PURPLE!!
I was having a hard time deciding if I should go for lavender or bright purple, but decided that the lighter one will most probably stain faster than the darker one. I think the assistant was a little pissed at my flickering mind. Ops! But hey, it is a big decision for me because I have to LIVE with it… for a month.

Picture

Bottom row – start of 2nd month

Picture

The crooked teeth has definitely slanted to a whole new angle and right now I have a gap between the crooked teeth and its neighbour, so food gets stuck in between. And let me tell you, it is freaking tough to remove the stuff stuck in between when I’m eating. It’s so annoying!

Picture

Top row – start of 2nd month

Picture

Week 1 vs start of 2nd month

The slanted tooth circled above has definitely closed back in and start to rotate anti-clockwise.

All in all, I just hope that the crooked teeth don’t stray anymore further, and that the extraction gaps close up completely soon so that food like noodles don’t start curling around the expose wires.

That’s it for now!
Oh here’s a unnecessary #OOTD picture from my instagram (wide grin)

BRACES WEEK 3

Hey there!

I’m back for a mini update on my week 3 braces!

There really isn’t much of a noticeable difference this week, hence I will make this post short and sweet.

I have been eating things without a care in the world, and my teeth are holding up pretty well!
Slacking all around at home means that I have the tendency to snack excessively.
Since I had my braces on, I have had crazy cravings for otah, bubble tea (PEARLS!!) as well as chips.
I was not able to enjoy these fully until a few days ago! I drank my favourite WOOBBEE Honey Mint with Pearl, and I felt like I was in heaven. To be honest, I did not enjoy it as much as I did when I didn’t have braces. That’s because the mini pearls get into the gap left behind from my extractions and refuse to leave its position. In addition as I only have 2 back teeth left, I find it hard to chew many pearls at a go. Nonetheless, I am contented. (Wide braces grin)

Also, everytime when I eat chips, my Mom will remind me that my ceramic braces snap easily. I mean, chips are really not that hard to chew, so there’s no need to worry, right? (I hope..) Furthermore I try to take smaller bites so I’m sure the snapping situation will not happen to me. FINGERS CROSSED.

Anyway, I just want to express my relieve about getting ceramic braces. Because it is seriously quite unnoticeable, people who haven’t seen me for awhile did not even realize I had them on until I mention to them!! That’s a good thing for me, because I hope that my braces stay as unnoticeable as possible and slowly work their magic secretly. 😛

Pictures time!

To be honest, I cannot wait to go for my next braces appointment.
In my opinion, any time whereby your teeth are not aching is time that has been wasted.
I just want to hurry and go to my next appointment, get my teeth tighten a whole lot again and let them shift as soon as possible. But there must be a reason why dentists make us come the next month, right?
Oh well, I shall be patient. (Sigh)That’s it for this week! When I see more improvements in my teeth, I will be sure to update!

BRACES WEEK 2 X MY VIEW ON KDRAMA “BRIDE OF THE CENTURY”

Hey there!

I survived Braces Week 1! (Happy dance) It may be too early for me to celebrate, but I feel like I’ve overcame the worse part of this braces process.

I have gotten comfortable with having my braces on, to the point whereby I sometimes forget I even have them in my mouth. However, eating is still quite a hassle because the food gets stuck in every single gap possible!! It gets very annoying and when my tongue tries to get the food out, the brackets/wire cut at it, resulting in tongue ulcers. No fun I tell you, not fun. Now I’ve learnt to be more diligent and keep my tongue away from my braces, especially the back area where the wire ends because when the wire cuts the tongue, it’s hell lot of pain.

I did not experience any major ulcers whatsoever, just that the wire at the back still pokes into my cheeks. I no longer put wax on the rough areas because it’s so troublesome and I don’t want to eat any more wax than I already did. (I know it is non-toxic, but still..)

One problem I realized is that lipstick smudge easily onto my braces because the brackets are protruding. This is a big problem to me because I love bright lipsticks, however when the lipstick smudges onto the brackets, it is usually hard to remove without the flossing tool. In order to avoid this problem, I usually do the finger trick (insert finger into mouth, purse lips together and withdraw finger) to ensure that the lipstick do not get too close to the teeth.

My lisp is slowly going away, however I can no longer smile without my teeth showing because it looks very forceful and the sides of my lips will not close together thanks to the protruding brackets. (And that means I cannot selfie without showing my braces TT )

Picture

A comparison between my teeth at the start of week 1 and 2.
I used a proper camera for week 2’s picture instead of my phone’s camera, and that is probably why the image looks so much clearer and whiter. (However, I would like to think of it as my teeth getting whiter due to the extra amount of care I give them. DON’T POP MY BUBBLE PLEASE!)
There is not much visible difference at this angle, for the moment.

Picture

Here’s a comparison of my bottom row.
I understand that week 1’s picture is really blur as compared to week 2’s. (I promise to use a proper camera from now on!)
But the image below will show the areas that have slight differences.

Picture

The red circles identify the areas that are of slight difference.
I have really crooked front teeth at the bottom row, and if you look closely at the areas that are circled, there are some improvements despite the short period of time.
The circled area on the left shows that the tooth is no longer overlapping as much as before. When I look into the mirror, from the inside, it is more obvious because I start seeing the edge of the slanted tooth that used to be covered by the tooth beside it.
Similarly, the circled area on the right shows that the tooth does not overlap the tooth beside it as much as before.
These are really small improvements that may not seem obvious enough to others, but because they are my teeth, I am able to better notice and even feel the difference.

Picture

Here’s my upper row comparison picture.
The upper row has relatively less movements as compared to the lower one. Probably because the upper row does not have as much problems as the bottom row.

Picture

Not sure whether you can see it clearly or not, but my two front teeth on the upper row has shifted slightly inwards and is not as protruding. I feel like the degree that they protrude has lessen, which is awesome. Because the braces has made my teeth feel so tight, when I push my tongue against the two front teeth, I can feel them shifting outwards a little and when I use my tongue to pull them back, they shift back a little. They feel a little loose, like baby tooth that can be shook when they are about to fall out.

It may not be as clear from the above picture, but from the picture below, you can see the difference in the degree angles of the “V”.

Picture

See? I’m not delusional, right?

Picture

Picture

I haven’t seen much improvements in the 4 gaps’ closure. The upper gaps are about 0.7cm now, while the lower gaps are about 1cm. Hopefully they will close up soon because the food kept getting stuck at these holes and are unable to be rinsed out because of the wire blocking.

I’ve been watching the Kdrama “Bride of the Century”, starring Lee HongKi, thanks to Dav’s recommendation!
It’s quite an enjoyable drama, and seeing that so many drama reviewers have been hooked on the show, this is definitely a good drama to catch. However, despite the awesome plot concept, I feel like the show is seemingly lacking.Putting aside the visually attractive actors (HONGKI <3), I feel like there are many loopholes in the development of the plot. The actresses’ acting skills  are beyond awesome, especially the lead actress! She carries a double role so well! However, I feel that the guys are the ones that need some brushing up. In my opinion, Hongki did so much better as Jeremy in “You’re Beautiful” than this drama. I feel like he wasn’t able to sink into character and sometime you can see from his eyes that he’s not immersed in his role. I’m sure he is capable for something better than this, but probably the role of a cold hearted heir does not really suit our bubbly band singer.

Tell me I’m not alone in this, but I have an issue with his character’s fashion sense as well. Like, WHAT’S UP WITH THE NEVER ENDING TURTLE NECK?! I don’t have a neck fetish, mind you, but Hongki does not seem very tall and that disappearing neck is not helping!

Picture

We need some Hong Ki Collarbones please, stylist Noona!

Picture

Neck neck neck.

In addition, when the show is at its climax, I find myself hoping that Doo Rim will appear weaker instead of acting like Hercules and braving through all this shit alone because what Kang Ju needs to realize is that he’s not the only one hurting. Seeing his beloved being so strong makes him whimper even more. Maybe it’s just me in this one though, because many viewers seem to like that the girl doesn’t act all weak and stuff. Call me outdated, but I still prefer the traditional storylines whereby the girls are always weaker in order to fulfil the appearance of the knight in shinning amour.

Oh, another issue I have is that the drama’s editing seems a little awkward and unnatural. I find that the show does not seem to flow very well between scenes and that bugs me a lot. I find myself getting confused sometimes, when a scene comes to an abrupt ending, and the introduction of a new scene does not link up with the previous one.

In addition, I absolutely hated the part whereby Yi Hyun is in coma because he’s protecting Doo Rim. As if there are not enough obstacles to cross, now Doo Rim has to be guilt-ridden by her Oppa?! It just drives me mad.

Despite my many complains, I still managed to sit through episode 11 and 12 consecutively yesterday, and this goes to show that the drama is not bad, if I can try to ignore all the tiny rages sparking in my head.

Now, to end off this post…
Here’s a mandatory awkward selfie for you.

BRACES WEEK 1

Hey there,

I finally have my braces on! It’s been 3 days, and I still cannot believe I actually did it.

The bonding process was a breeze. My dentist was chatting with me while he did the entire process, and I swear I didn’t know it was done until he suddenly gave me a mirror to look at myself. There was no pain, however, the bonding agent tasted extremely funky and at the end of the process I had these gritty layer on my teeth and lips which went off after rinsing. When the bands (HOT PINK!) went on, I felt like each toot was squeezed for a moment, it felt slightly uncomfortable.

I was taught how to brush & floss my teeth, and my dentist sent me home with a “The pain will begin in 2 hours. GOOD LUCK!! HAHAHA.” -.-
Lucky (or unlucky) for me, the pain only began 4 hours later, and my gosh, it was more itchy than pain. I felt like there was an hollow itch in every single tooth and there was no way I could cure it other than eating cold stuff or applying pressure on my gums. It was so annoying I had the extreme urge to pluck out my braces, but managed to control myself with the thought of the money that went into it. It became so unbearable I eventually went to bed early to sleep the discomfort away. To be honest, I would rather it be plain pain (read aloud) than feeling tingly and itchy. ARGHHH…

Picture

Ceramic braces on the top, metal braces on the bottom

As you can see, my top row isn’t that much of a problem but my bottom row is all over the place. This is especially so for the first 2 bottom teeth. To be honest, I am really glad I went for ceramic braces on the top row because I am 100% sure now that I would have looked terrible with metal braces on the top row. Even though the ceramic braces are not as un-obvious as I would have liked it to be, it has a more subtle effect than the metal braces. It doesn’t go like “BAM! OMG U HAVE BRACES ON?!!” but rather more like a “Oh, you have braces!” Low profile braces, I like.

Here’s my experience for the first 3 days of having braces..

Day 1: The entire day I felt like I had Lego bricks in my mouth because the brackets were so rough. I was able to eat dinner without problem because the discomfort only happened after dinner time. Food kept getting stuck in all the spaces in my mouth and my tongue is unable to reach some of the areas so I had to rinse like 10 times after finishing my meal. It was really troublesome and eventually I had to brush my teeth to get all the food out. Pain/itch kicked in after 4 hours and I had to keep myself occupied with other things so I can ignore the extreme discomfort. It got so unbearable I was tempted to eat panadol/pain killer but decided that if I cannot tolerate this then I won’t be able to get through the other days. Eventually, I slept my misery away.

Day 2:  Throughout the night, I was awaken everytime my upper row of teeth accidentally clank with my lower row of teeth, because it hurt sooooo badly, like a sudden electric shock or maybe the pain of eating icecream with sensitive teeth x 10 times worse. Woke up in the morning with extremely dry lips and I found it hard to open my mouth because my inner lips were stuck to the brackets. My teeth were sore but it was not as uncomfortable as the first day. The itch went away, but I was unable to eat any kind of solid food because my teeth refuse to chew. However, I was well enough to head out on a date with the boyfriend, but I had trouble speaking because I had a lisp. Even smiling felt extremely awkward to me because my lips cannot seem to smoothly come back into its default position and I have to do a pouty action to get the lips to close together. It was so annoying and I felt damn unsightly everytime I did that action. But I cannot help it! Need to ditch this bad habit before it becomes permanent. My braces made me talk a lot lesser than usual and most of the time the boyfriend was speaking while I just nod away. Had soupy rice for dinner and rinsing in the public is so troublesome especially when the public toilets are dirty. It makes me hesitate putting tap water into my mouth because the water doesn’t feel clean. I secretly rinsed my mouth with some green tea (Ops!). By the end of the day I was eating ham and stuffing myself with seaweed. I think I’ve started to get used to having braces.

Day 3: I woke up forgetting I even had braces on! It takes me a lot lesser time to brush and floss my teeth as compared to Day 1. I noticed that I’ve gotten my first ever ulcer after getting braces, had my first attempt of using wax to cover the bracket that was affecting my ulcer. The wax smelled and tasted like strawberry bubblegum! Thank you, dentist! I no longer felt any itch or pain, unless I bite down really hard on my teeth which will result in some soreness. I still cannot speak properly and its annoying the hell out of me! Please tell me it’ll go away in time.. Still on soft food diet, but I can chew a lot better now and it’s become a habit to rinse after every meal. I am determined not to let my ceramic braces stain!

Day 4: I had a problem when I was eating my breakfast. Because my teeth have shifted, there were excess wires protruding at the back of my right cheek. The wire kept digging into my cheek everytime I tried to chew with my back teeth, and let me tell you, it hurts like MAD. It feels like I have injections over and over again at the back of my cheek. I decided to use wax to cover the excess wire but because it is located far to the back of my mouth it was really hard for me to see where to place the wax. In addition, the wax will not stick if the area is wet, and hence, I had to use a tissue to dry the area and place the wax. With all that saliva, it is honestly quite challenging. I no longer bother taking out the wax when I am eating, because it is too troublesome to put a new piece of wax back again. However, the thought of eating the wax scares me, so I kept checking to make sure that the wax on my bottom front teeth and back teeth are still intact. Besides the protruding wire, my front teeth have become less sensitive and sore, and I can gently chew on them now, which is good. This braces have restricted my diet and I was watching some cooking channel on Youtube when I felt like crying because I seriously crave marshmallows and popcorn. (Sniff sniff) Hopefully I can enjoy those two soon, after my teeth completely gets used to the shifting.

Sorry for blur image
Even though the upper row may seem pretty aligned, I realized that some of the teeth were facing at different angles. With the braces, they will be aligned to all face their appropriate angles, perfecting the upper row.
It is without say that the bottom row is messy messy messy!
When I smile, 8 teeth shows, and this is a good thing according to the standards that China had set when they were picking volunteers for the Olympics back in 2008 – “Big smiles with six to eight teeth showing and 45 degree handshakes.

From the side, you can see my slight over bite, and this is the main reason why I decided to go through the braces process.

Week 1 – How I look when I smile naturally

Picture

A little unsightly but this is how my bottom row looks like. There are two huge gaps at the areas where by teeth were extracted. I have extending rubber bands linking the two teeth beside each gap, and I supposed the bands are to help close up the gaps as soon as possible.

My upper teeth! They are a protruding outwards, especially the front part. I hope the gaps close up soon!

That’s it for now!

POOL TIME X BRACES TOMORROW?!

Hey there,

After much pestering from the boyfriend to go exercise with him, I gave in and suggested that we go swimming instead of hitting the gym or jogging. The reason is simple, I don’t like to sweat. #nojudging

To be honest, I don’t really like swimming as well, because I am slightly hydrophobic.

The funny thing is that I used to go for swimming lessons every Sunday with my Brother, and learnt swimming in Temasek Poly’s pool for 5 to 6 years. Swimming 12 laps in the pool that goes up to 4 metres deep was no kick to me. I even learnt how to dive off the jump board(?) when I was in Primary 1 or 2. I eventually stopped taking swimming lessons because every time I enter the pool I start gagging and was always on the verge to puke in the pool. I have no idea why that happened, but I guess it was my body rejecting the activity.

I used to be able to move so freely in the pool, but in the present I am no longer able to swim more than one lap, and I suck at holding my breath in the water. What remained from the past swimming trainings was the very basic frog style. I’m quite pathetic, I know. In addition, I actually modified the frog style in a way whereby I no longer put my head into the pool, just because I freaking hate the feeling of water clogging up my ears. I get very afraid when I swim away from the edges of the pool, because I have all kind of made up scenarios in my head whereby I start drowning and cannot find anything to hold on to.

Despite my hydrophobia, I still enjoy hanging out at the pool, and today I brought along my Lifeproof phone casing with me so that I can have fun with my phone in the water while the boyfriend go do some water exercises. Before using the casing I was really paranoid about it being not waterproof and damaging my phone, so I went online and googled about ways to test if your waterproof phone casing is really waterproof. Basically, I just folded a paper towel into the casing and splash water at it from all angles. Then, I submerged the case into a basin of water for an hour. After that, remove the casing from the water and open it up to see if the paper towel has gotten wet at the edges or not. Thankfully, the casing passed the waterproof test, and that was why I had the guts to bring my phone down into the water. Having the phone with us at the pool is a whole new fun experience, however, as the protected screen reduces the touch screen sensitivity, it was really hard trying to click the virtual camera button to snap a shot. I lost count of how many times we had to submerge into the water just for one shot.

——————–
Tomorrow is the day I’ll finally be putting on my braces!
I really do not know what to expect right now, because in my opinion all my dentist is going to do is glue on the brackets and put in the metal wire. However, what I heard from Nat & Bri were mostly about it hurting for the entire first week because it is just so tight in the mouth. I just cannot imagine how tightening the teeth feels like in the mouth. I just cannot wait to close up the 4 gaps in my mouth left behind by the pulled teeth.
I don’t know whether I should be excited for my slightly new look, or to be sad that I will look geeky for the next 1 to 2 years. I’m just quite afraid that I would look weird, or speak like I have short tongue with my ceramic braces on. Also, I will have to start my university life with braces, and that freaks me out. I just hope I suit the wire across my mouth.Time, please fly as fast as possible.

XOXO,
Iris
